The Thrills and Prizes of Poker

It is one of the risk games that can be played with or without money at stake. It is a gambling game that can also be considered as a strategy game. For card games enthusiasts, Poker might just be the game for you.

Poker is a four-player game played with a deck of cards and chips that represent certain amounts of money. There are several styles of playing Poker, but the most common and the fastest is the no-limit Texas hold 'em. In No Limit, you can bet as few or as many chips anytime. You can even bet all in, meaning, you can bet all of your chips as a strategy. The game starts by giving the antes, small amounts of money place in the pot. There are two antes in the Texas hold 'em style, called the Small and Big Blind. The two players left of the dealer give the blind, the player nearest to the dealer give the Small Blind while the next gives the Big Blind. The Big Blind is twice the Small Blind and eventually increases after every round. After giving the antes, each player will receive two cards, called Hole Cards. Then, the first round of betting begins. Every player has the option to raise his bet, all in, or fold or not to play in that round. If everyone except one has folded his card, he will win the prize in the pot. After everyone has finished betting, community cards will be displayed. First, three cards will be revealed and placed in the center of the table. These cards are called flop. After which, there will be another round of betting. Next, the fourth card, called the turn card or 4th street, will be displayed. The players then initiate the third round of betting. Then, the last card will be displayed, which will be called the river, or 5th street. For the last time, players will give their bets. After this last bet, the players' face down cards will be shown together with the community cards. The face down cards will be compared to see who wins the prize in the pot.

To determine who wins, there is a certain rank of poker hands determined. The lowest is a high card. Next is a pair, then two pairs. Obviously, two pairs are better than one. There's also three of a kind, three cards of the same number. Next is a straight, five cards in chronological order. Then follows a flush, five cards of the same suit. Full house is a pair and three of a kind. Next is four of a kind. Next is a variation of a flush called the straight flush, five cards in chronological order and of the same suit. Lastly is the royal flush, a ten to ace of the same suit.

Poker is complicated for newbies but it surely gives thrills and some addiction once you master it.
